Do people not bother practicing a reasonable and healthy dose of scepticism anymore?

Today one of my best friends left the island.. Though I know that it’s for the best, and that great things will come because of his decision.. I can’t help but feel sad.. remembering all the times he made us laugh.. the times he drove me far as hell just so I could take pictures.. all the stupid spontaneous things he talked me into doing (like cutting my hair to the current length that it is lol)… all the corny but truly heartfelt things that he always said.. all the faith he had in all of us. To think that all of that is in the past and that he isn’t only 5 minutes away anymore brings tears to my eyes.. but these are not only tears of sadness, they are also tears of joy.. He’s got a job now that will put food on the table and take him to new places.. The United States Coast Guard not getting the perfect soldier, but they are getting one hell of a human being! I know that he will do his best doing whatever he is assigned wherever he gets stationed. Maika`i pomaika`i my brother. Take care.

I haven’t posted on here in a while because I haven’t felt the need to blog about anything really, that is, up until now. So, today I hung out with Lauren until she had to go to work at 5, at which time i went home and debated whether or not i should go fishing. I went with my gut and loaded my shit up. This fishing outing was no different than any of my others in that I always forget something, only this time it was my whipping rod. By the time i realized it I was already half way there, so I just kept on driving. I had initially planned to go to my usual spot (that I only catch rubbish fish at) but jamming out to the Foo Fighters caused me to miss the turn, so just kept on driving to my second choice. The spot I like to park at is far as hell from the spot I fish at, so by the time I got all settled in it was like 5:30 already and the sun was going down. So, the sun set, and I waited. After about an hour, I got bored and decided to try handlining with some small hooks and my homemade glowflies. Caught my first Aholehole so I was stoked for a little while, even though I had to through em’ back. After the second one, the bites stopped completely. I looked over at my 11 footer and noticed that something was playing with the bait for a while now, so I reeled it in only to find a small eel. Usually I just cut em loose, but I figured “what the hell, bait”, so I killed it and threw it in my cooler. As I was beating the eel, this old Japanese man snuck up on me and mumbled something behind me. I told him “anago” and he stuck around, I guess because I spoke 1 word of Japanese and he thought I would catch something else. There was one point while i was beheading the eel that he came real close and grabbed my hook as it was hanging all tangled from the eels thrashing and said some words. I didn’t understand what he was saying but i understood that he wanted me to cut the line, so i did. He then showed me how to snell the hook in a way that I’d never seen before. I thanked him and casted it back out. I sat back in my chair and went back to trying my luck at the Aholes. Amazingly, I somehow managed to converse with the Japanese man in the most broken Japanese I’ve ever spoken (I haven’t taken a Japanese class in 2 years) and found out that he was from Yokohama. I told him I had been there in high school and that i thought it was beautiful. After a while I went to check the second pole and found that it was stuck on the reef, so i busted the leader and brought it in. The man held my flashlight as I retied my rig. I was going for bottom feeders with a short lead line, but I decided to chance it with a long lead line and go for Papio. I cut up the eel (first time doing that) and struggled but eventually got it on the hook and casted it out. After a little while, the old man told me he was leaving. He told me his name was Takeshi. I thanked him for everything and with a gentle “ganbatte” he was gone. 15 minutes later, it was about 9 o’clock and I decided that I better pack up and go home. Just as I was walking towards the 10 footer, WIZZZZZZZ! Something took the eel and was making a run for it. I grabbed the pole and began to fight the fish. I hadn’t planned on staying til dark, so I didn’t have my head lamp, just a little 1 LED flashlight, so when I got the fish close enough to see it splash I still couldn’t make out what it was. In all the fumbling of the flashlight and the pole I failed to keep the line tight and the fish made a run for the rocks. It got stuck and I was panicking. Luckily, the fish darted out again freeing my line but it swam around the platform I was on threatening to snag my line on that, so I ran to the edge of the pier and shined my flashlight in the water. “Holy shit, one Papio.” I made sure the fish was tired enough and in one swoop I bounced it up onto the ground. This was my first Papio of edible size (3 lbs at 17 in) and only my second ever. I couldn’t help but think of how the Japanese man had told me good luck and how he might have blessed me or passed his magic Japanese man fishing powers on. Only time will tell hehe. Thanks to Kyle for letting me borrow the rod that landed the fish, couldn’t have done it without :)
